Shadow of the Vampire

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 by Price

As per-usual, I am way behind the times.

I THINK I remember hearing about Shadow of the Vampire many years back, the movie poster brings back memories from some part of my brain I haven’t yet destroyed.

The ongoing homo-erotic subplot between Murnau and Albin Grau (Udo Kier) is insanely amusing for whatever reason. And Willem Dafoe as a vampire is just fucking hysterical. The Green Goblin as a vampire? Absolutely works.

I can’t tell if the movie is trying to be funny at times, or just comes across that way. It doesn’t help matters that Malkovich has no German accent whatsoever, yet he’s supposedly playing the greatest German film director ever.

This movie though is a winner in my book, and absolutely worth the rental cost. It gives high laughs and some good chills at a relatively low risk rate. You already have the good cast, and silly storyline. I highly recommend it.

Antichrist

No, not this one:

But this one:

antichrist

The film Antichrist is being shown at Cannes this week, and apparently it’s raising quite the shitstorm of controversy. The film, which apparently stars only Willem Dafoe (whom I love for some unknown reason) and Charlotte Gainsbourg are the only actors in the movie, which features brutal sexual violence. I’m talking genital mutilation apparently. I am going to make it very clear that gential mutilation is a horrible and disgusting thing, but this is a horror blog, and it’s quite horrific. So there you go.

The movie has generally been panned, but I think it’ll merit a viewing simply on the controversy. Kinda like the Passion, except minus the maniacal director. Although Lars von Trier’s “I am the best film director in the world” quote had to raise a few eyebrows. I love hubris.
