BAM Vampire Fest

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 by Price

Back before Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse essentially ruined vampires’ image, there were classic versions of Dracula and the vampires. Somehow, those movies morphed into the versions of vampire movies we have today, and I don’t know where things went wrong.

Regardless of how you feel, we’re going old school with vampires.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music is gearing up for their vampire fest, starting this week. If you live in Brooklyn/NYC, I suggest checking this out. We’ll be there for some of these I am sure.

From the site, the event is described as:

Sink your teeth into 33 films featuring cinema’s most dangerous—and dangerously alluring—figure. From Lugosi to the lesbian undead, Murnau to Maddin, camp-horror staple to postmodern, society-as-sickness metaphor, the vampire’s reign over popular imagination continues to seduce filmmakers over to the dark side.

Looking through the lineup so far,  I’m happy to report I have only seen 2 of the movies. The Vampire Lovers is definitely at the top of my list.

I’ve probably written about the Last Rites gallery half a dozen times on here, yet never actually went. Well, if you’re in NYC the weekend of July 10th, checking out the opening of a brand new group show called Lead Poisoning, along with a solo exhibit from artist Jason D’Aquino.

Very cool and dark stuff. Stuff you should like.

Monster Mania Convention August 2010

Oh yes. It’s that time of year again. Summer convention season.

Monster Mania’s semi-annual convention is on the horizon. John Carpenter is the guest of honor. There’s a Pet Cemetery reunion. You want to watch out for that road.

Vincent and I attended this convention back in 2005, right after moving to NYC. Needless to say, we had an amazing time. We road in a bus for two hours and sneakily drank Coors Light at 7 in the morning.

We walked around buying stupid shit.

I met Adrienne Barbeau and got a picture taken with her. Hot.

We got drunk at a Bahama Breeze and TGIFridays down the road at a mall.

We laughed. We cried.

It’s good convention fun. I think we’re going to go this year.

My Boyfriend is a Zombie

OK. If you live in the NYC area, you have no excuse for missing My Boyfriend is a Zombie, showing June 3rd to the 27th at the Theater for the New City.

From the show’s website:

In William Electric Black’s newest musical, two guys are in love with the same girl. One’s a monster and the other’s a wise guy with quick fists. Who’s gonna get to take her to the dance? Sounds like “Oklahoma,” doesn’t it? Fooled ya, it’s “My Boyfriend Is A Zombie.” The year is 1958 and the dance in question is the Springtown High School Halloween Hop. This time, the monster gets the girl.

This just sounds amazing. If nothing else, it’s a great excuse to either dress up as a zombie on a non-Halloween day, or get shitty with friends and be cultured and see some theater instead of a movie.

Shit to Do: Nightmares Haunted House in NYC

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 by Price

The Nightmares Haunted House is up and running again in NYC (already has been for a few weeks in fact). I went once and honestly wasn’t all that impressed, but that was before they had a badass website that pimps their place pretty good, so I’m thinking I’ll give it a chance this year.

Get a discount by referencing Bloody-Disgusting. Additional promotions and discounts can be found here.

UPDATE: So I may have spoken too soon … check out this review on The Horror of It All … sounds like it’s less bite than desired.

Shit to Do: Edward Scissorhands at the Brooklyn Bridge Park

If you’re in the NYC area and have nothing to do tonight, I recommend heading to Brooklyn Bridge Park and checking out Edward Scissorhands, playing as part of the Movies with a View series. You get to see a good movie for free, plus you get a pretty kickass view:

While not exactly a horror film, I still love Edward Scissords for the Tim Burton connection and generally creepy visuals the movie provides. Either way, it’s a good excuse to sneak booze into a park and get out and enjoy the last few days of summer before your life becomes consumed with Halloween season.
