What a “fest”. What an awful display of human kind. What a moderate display of music. Also one of the hottest days I have ever experienced in my life.

Truth be told, the festival organizers did manage to put on a great show. The setup and execution of the music was spotless. I initially questioned their alternating stage approach, but it was pretty cool to have constant metal blaring for 5 straight hours until the main stage lit up. There were tons of fun and silly merch tents for us to roam around. And lots of wildlife to look at as well.

If you followed our twitter page, you would’ve seen our updates. Here’s a summary:

• Drank on the bus
• Started the day like anyone should before an all-day festival, drinking before noon in a dark bar
• Took the ferry over, saw some great jorts
• Got to the show and watched Norma Jean put on a decent show
• Saw this abomination that I couldn’t stop looking at
• People were getting tired of the sun pretty quickly
• Drank … and drank … and drank some more
• Saw more wildlife
• Watched 5 Finger Butt Fuck, who absolutely sucked
• Saw Lamb of God Destroy it
• Saw Rob Zombie put on a great live show, even if he was pretty much winded the entire time
• Left before Korn had a chance to get on stage (thankfully)

There was once upon a time when I would’ve given everything my 15 or 16 year-old self had for the chance to shake hands with Jonathon Davis. Those times are LONG gone (as is my tolerance for their “music” or whatever it is they’ve released in the past few years). However, this hasn’t stopped Vincent and I from buying tickets to our second straight annual Rockstar Mayhem Festival.

I think the overall lineup is not that bad. Lamb of God is one of our favorite bands, 3 Inches of Blood does some nice epic metal, and Norma Jean/Chimaira always put on good live shows.

There will be some bullshit there. I just don’t trust In This Moment. More importantly, I don’t trust any bassist who plays like this.

I also don’t like Five Finger Death Punch, mainly because their singer looks too much like Fred Durst mixed with Shifty Shellshock.

Regardless, there are some commemorative covers of Revolver magazine for this festival. It’s the kind of metal/horror crossover thing that should ideally make us jump for joy, and it probably will once we’re liquored up and buying shitty merch, but I’m just not there yet.

August 28th, otherwise known as Hallowee… wat? Whatever, Rob Zombie’s newest abortion film comes out tonight, and even though he’s made some awful films in my opinion, I’ll still go see it. To me’s much like Johnny Depp, in that no matter how much shit he puts out, he always recovers and I still think highly of him. Let’s hope this one is ok, for my sake.

Update: Apparently it is far from “ok.”

Despite the shifting tides of emotion I’ve felt about the different stages of White/Rob Zombie’s music over the years, I’ve always liked the man himself, and this short interview about his upcoming White Zombie anthology, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, is a great read for a slow-as-shit Wednesday and and even more agonizingly un-evil November.
