So I already posted about GWAR, but lest us forget, that the night before we went and saw the venerable Immortal at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan.

Immortal is one of Vincent and I’s favorite bands by far (just check out the tag search results for Immortal), and this was the 3rd time we got to see them live.

The first time we saw them, we ended up drunk with a SHITLOAD of merch. We thought at the time it might be their only tour we’d ever get to see.

The 2nd time we saw them, I got so drunk that we were unable to make use of the VIP tickets we had, which included a meet-and-great and a poster. Oops. We got cool lanyards though.

This time, we had VIP tickets again! Except all it meant was a free poster (we didn’t pick it up) and early entrance. We are notorious for getting to concerts at the last minute to ensure we can get the most affordable booze in our system.

They ripped it again, as usual. One By One almost made me cry. The were grim. They were frostbitten. They were simply, Immortal.

Their live shows will never get old. Ever.

As per usual, GWAR was hysterical, terrifying, awkward, all that you could want from their live show. I left more ashamed of the human race than ever before.

We went to see Doomriders at Union Pool Saturday night, and found ourselves blacking out to some rifftastic metal (literally, we had a LOT to drink on Saturday).

I am insanely in love with Doomriders. I want to live and breath them. I quite often listen to their songs while strolling around Brooklyn, instantly feeling part badass, part evil spirit, part Casanova, all kinds of awesome basically. I think of the Grim Reaper riding a Harley, drinking a bottle of jack, listening to Doomriders. That’s what I envision myself as. It’s very existential.

Not only did Doomriders slay (as expected) , but openers Sweet Cobra and Unearthly Trance (BROOKLYN LOVE!) caught us by surprise, as we’re not known for showing up on time to shows, but were extremely impressed by both bands’ live shows. Do recommend.

These 3 bands paired very nicely with copious amounts of Budweiser.

Vincent and I went to see Immortal Tuesday, March 30th. As it was when we last saw them in 2007, it was a complete and utter shitshow. I awoke completely confused on Wednesday morning, knowing nothing except that I had my face melted the night before.

So last week, I was back in NYC for a week-long trip of debauchery and some good music, beginning on Monday night with the Paganfest. We were pretty pumped for this show, as it provided a nice even mix of pirate, viking, and folk metal. However, as usual, we were only able to make it for the closing act.

Why? Mainly because of mine and Vincent’s propensity for alcohol, and general bad timekeeping. That being said, I’m not sure how much more of the madness I could have taken beyond one ridiculous metal band. That band was Korpiklaani, and the mixture of metal and pure joy of being alive almost blew my mind away.

I think singing about booze, having bits of dead animal on stage, and being signed to Nuclear Blast records make you pretty damn metal. And just bizarre, which makes a perfect fit for us.

Korpiklaani is the only band I have ever friended on Facebook. That is no lie.

I am very excited about this. Almost 3 years in the making, the live RoadRunner United concert will be released as a DVD. I went to this show in December of 2005 at the Nokia Times Square Theater here in NYC, and it was totally killer. Being able to see so many of your idols from one’s early days of metal fandom was extremely awesome and almost brought a tear to my eye.

If you didn’t make it, then you must get this DVD. The combinations of various metal gods on stage together were so intriguing and unique, you will quickly realize that you are witnessing something truly special.

The show kicked ass, but I have to admit the highlight of my night was watching Glen Benton troll his way out of the venue, and pester a few fans for a bite of their sidewalk pretzel. No joke. Verbatim, he said “GIMME SOME OF THAT PRETZEL.” It was unbelievable.

More to come later, but I had to share. That was the most ridiculous live show I have ever witnessed. I must apologize to GWAR for not giving them more credit in an earlier post. Holy fake bodily fluids.

OK, so I’m really going to throw you a curveball right here.  The band I am about to endorse is definitely not metal, but if you want to group a bunch of Halloweenish bands together, these guys must be included.
