Today in History

Saturday, August 6th, 2011 by Price

Today is M. Night Shyamalan‘s birthday. I generally think his movies are complete garbage and incite eye gouging, but I recently saw his latest flick, Devil, and finally found a movie of his I liked (I kinda like Unbreakable but it was just so cheesy).

In case you were asleep for the past year, here’s the trailer from Devil, worth at least a spot in your Netflix queue:

X-Entertainment’s 2011 Halloween Countdown Has Begun

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 by Vincent

Look, I’m not above admitting that I only run this site to extol the brilliance that is Matt, the man who runs the original “remember this?” site: X-Entertainment. He’s been doing this shit since before youtube, before blogs were called “blogs,” and before anyone was talking about Thundercats after 1988. He is a genius, a gift, and the reason I read the internet every day. Well, no one online quite appreciates Halloween quite like Matt does, and Matt has begun his 2011 Halloween Countdown. Observe and appreciate. You owe him:

Rubber (quick review)

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011 by Price

If there’s one thing that can help cure the summer blues, it’s a good horror movie. I’ve already seen quite a few lifesavers this season that have saved otherwise miserable days.

Rubber was one of those, and I can say without a doubt that it was one of the most creative movies I have ever seen. I could also understand why some people might call it one of the dumbest movies they have ever seen.

I’m not going to spoil anything by telling you that the movie is about a tire that kills people. That’s pretty obvious. What I won’t tell you are some of the other ridiculousness that occurs within the plotline. You’re left speechless and thinking “WTF????” plenty of times. But you sort of give in to the stupidity, and embrace it. You have to.

It’s got to be a difficult task to try and act in such an absurd setting. I give kudos to the cast who provided some of the finest B-grade horror movie acting I have ever seen. They got me laughing for the duration of the film.

Check out the trailer below.

Troll Hunter (quick review)

Monday, June 6th, 2011 by Price

I caught Troll Hunter last weekend while scrolling through my video on demand options, hungover on the couch. It was actually available on VOD prior to being in theaters was pretty enticing as well.

No spoilers here, but watch the trailer and you’ll figure it out: the movie is about a troll hunter. That in itself sold me.

It’s a damn good horror movie that is tremendously fresh and reassuring, in that unique horror movies are still being made. The Norwegian-made film features several well-known comedians who mix the right amount of humor in (just enough to make you laugh before you tense up or nearly shit your pants), adding to a common lighthearted theme that runs common in the movies we’ve been watching lately.

Sure it may remind you of other mockumentary horror movies, or some “OH MY GOD” moments when they finally reveal the monsters you’ve been hearing, but whatever. I haven’t seen a horror movie featuring trolls in forever. Please check it out, you won’t regret it.

We Caught Rabies

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 by Vincent

Last night, as part of the TriBeCa Film Festival, Price and I saw what is billed as the “first Israeli horror movie” – Rabies. Whether that’s true or not I can’t attest to (I don’t honestly see how it could be, but it’s irrelevant). The movie was really damn good. The entire film was shot in Israel, and the dialog is in Hebrew, so you’ll need to be able to scan subtitles pretty quickly (who knew Israelis spoke at 400 wpm?).

Below is the trailer. I can’t imagine it won’t get picked up for wide release shortly, so when it does, catch it.

Note – The trailer is not subtitled, but you really don’t need subtitles to understand the international language of gore, terror, boobs, and woodland urination.

I finally saw Piranha 3D. And I am a better man for it.

Thursday, March 24th, 2011 by Price

There are some movies that suck. There are some movies that are good and you’ll always watch if they happen to come on TV (Terminator 2). There are some movies you say are amazing, but won’t even spend the time/energy to watch again (Memento).

Then, you have those movies that make you lose your shit immediately after watching, calling/texting/sexting/tweeting at all your friends, telling them “YOU MUST SEE THIS NOW.” This is EXACTLY how I felt after watching Piranha 3D.

DISCLAIMER: I didn’t actually see it in 3D. DISCLAIMER: It doesn’t matter at all. Much like watching Jason 3D, you figure out which parts were meant for 3D, and it kinda makes it funnier.

This post should be titled “we” saw Piranha 3D actually. Vincent saw it too, equally loving the cornucopia of gore and cleavage.

I seriously died (funny!) laughing so often throughout this movie. It starts off normal enough, and then shit just hits the fan. I really don’t want to get into details, but let’s just say it’s nonstop once it starts.

Jerry O’Connell is absolutely hysterical. I’ve liked him in the past, but he really pulls one on this time. This movie is omniscient, since you could substitute Charlie Sheen for his character  and not tell the difference. Ving Rhames is Ving Rhames, just a ridiculous badass. Everyone plays their part spot-on.

And the ending … oh the ending.

A meta point from all of this is that making this movie looked REALLY fun. I mean, literally PARTY PARTY PARTY BLOOD PARTY PARTY BLOOD BLOOD DONE. I love that recipe.

FEAR NET talks with Ti West About The Innkeepers

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 by Vincent

I love Ti West. I honestly think he’s the only horror director around today doing unique work, and he seems to know it because he continues to work very hard at it. His last film, House of the Devil, was brilliant. His new film, The Innkeepers, is set for release “in 2011,” and he recently caught up with FEAR NET at SXSW to discuss the location, filming, and the newly released poster for The Innkeepers. Read up here.

Two of the best White Zombie songs weren’t on their albums

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 by Price

The Airheads soundtrack and the Beavis and Butthead Experience (funny, because B&B have a cameo in Airheads as well). White Zombie must’ve really liked Beavis and Butthead.

Office Horror

Monday, February 28th, 2011 by Price

I showed up on Friday to witness the results of an office decorating contest we had, and let me say, I was in utter Heaven (or Hell, I should say …)!

Long story short, I work on a video product, and our theme was around this gorilla, who sucked in old shitty movies, and would “output” shiny ones. Either way, they needed to use a lot of old movie posters for effect, and ended up pretty much exclusively buying old horror posters, which made my day.

My team won the contest needless to say.

More after the jump …

Paranormal Activity 2 Promotes DVD Release With Free Augmented Reality iPhone Game

Thursday, February 17th, 2011 by Vincent

Ars Technica posted a cool article yesterday detailing the release of a new AR (Augmented Reality) game for the iPhone. It was developed to promote the upcoming release of Paranormal Activity 2 on DVD, and I was curious so I downloaded the game.

I’ve yet to fully explore it, but it is surprisingly large and involved for a game that could have been a total throwaway. The basic gameplay involves the user (you) navigating a map of your area (NYC being mine) investigating haunted locales. Once you find one you can search for ghosts, draw pentagrams to protect yourself, and generally act like a fool right out in public. It’s surprisingly fun.

I snapped the photo above last night as I was waiting to get my hair cut. Ghost, busted. Give it a whirl.
