Price the Homemaker found some good magazines.
October 6th, 2009 by PriceSo I get a little tipsy, end up in the suburbs in grocery stores, and this is the sort of stuff I end up with. Halloween magazines. For moms.
The Taste of Home Halloween Food and Fun special edition came first.
This little gem was cheap ($4.99) and has a nice convenient size, great for travel and subway reading.
Containing boatloads of Halloween recipes with spooky names, as well as some craft ideas, this thing is a steal.
Now I have to admit, I am not so certain how many of these recipes will actually get concocted in my apartment (probably zero, but I am going to try my hardest).
In the section aptly titled “Halloween Boo-Fet”, there are some great selections, which not only sound delicious but look the part:
- Coffin Pumpkin Cake
- witch’s hairy finger breadsticks
- Jack ‘O Lantern Oranges (kinda like carving mini pumpkins)
- Ghoul Ade (I would make the adult version)
- Spicy skeleton ribs
Nice selection of dessert ideas as well:
- Monster cutout cookies
- Buried surprise cupcakes (complete with eyes/body parts in the middle)
- Jack ‘O Lantern cream puffs
I must admit, the crafts section leaves a little to be desired from me. Mainly because I have no need to make a costume for a kid or paint faces. I even feel like a creep flipping through this section, and hide it to make sure no one thinks I’m a pedophile. Much less a pizza costume.
There are however some pretty decent pumpkin templates. It’s worth putting next to the toilet anyways. It’s meant to kinda mindless flip through, say “Oooh that looks neat I think I will try that out”.
Who am I kidding. I still can’t believe I bought this thing. Who do I think I am? That’s the power of Halloween for you!
The Martha Stewart Halloween magazine was a much more visually pleasing affair, albeit more daunting when it comes to actually thinking one can recreate any of the projects featured in the mag.
First off, I have to give it to Martha, she’s in the spirit, and she has some balls:

That’s creepy enough I think. Thumbs up for getting evil.
Flipping through the mag, I am amazed at how professionally it is put together, and how seamlessly it flows. I know Martha Stewart is a renowned publisher and kinda HAS to put out quality material, but seeing such a well done Halloween edition makes me happy.
Much like the Taste of Home, there are loads of recipes, costume, and craft ideas throughout. Let’s say this is the Target version vs Wal Mart. Everything is just nicer, cleaner, and ultimately more rewarding once you have it. Something like that.
Look at the spooky coffin treats! Amazing! I want!
Just in case Martha reads our blog and is thinking about suing us, I’ll refrain from posting any more shots of the mag. Just go and buy.
Happy Halloweening and soccer momming.
