I heart Metal Bars

March 24th, 2009 by Price

So since I’ve done nothing but drink the past month in London, I figure I’ll start writing about all of the places I have been drinking.

I’ll start today with Big Red. No, not this Big Red, but one of the 20 or so metal bars that inhabit the Camden neighborhood of North London.

To be quite honest, a lot of these places sort of run together. That’s just what happens when you’re drinking that much in that many different bars. They sort of run together.

Like a lot of the metal bars in London, Big Red follows a common theme of black and red, some skulls, and an almost biker feel to it, except for the fact that it’s crawling with 40 pound goth kids and guys who wouldn’t know what a vagina looked like if it slapped them in the face (goddamn I would LOVE to see a video of that).

Oh wait wrong bar. That was actually the Devonshire Arms, which had free copies of Vice magazine which was about the only thing that made me happy. The clientèle consisted mainly of the runners up from Dope and Wednesday 13 lookalike contests, which sickened me greatly. I wish I would have Google image searched the place before I went, because THIS GUY is the third result.

I ordered 2 drinks at a time just to give myself something to focus on other than the fact that 90 percent of the crowd was ugly. But I digress.

The bar itself was still pretty metal, albeit a bit cheesy:

I was there at night, looked much grungier and cobwebbed than during the light of day. It’s probably a great place for daydrinking even. Although it does say Hobgoblin on the outside …

They had the standard Jagermeister banner flying (they love that shit here), and some concert posters, and were playing some good metal. Not a bad start to the evening.

Big Red was a bit more down to earth:

At first glance, Big Red appears much much cheesier than the Devonshire Arms. Inside though, it’s much more of a bar than any of the “bars” I’ve been to in London, and the fact that I could have a table and relax with my drinking partner was quite refreshing.

They had quite an array of snacks, which made me very happy.

That is all. Fuck it.

Well…it’s tough to please a metaller…so maybe a Pugsly shot at Ben Crouch, Jager at The Intrepid or Garlic-infused Bloody Mary’s more to your liking.
Suggest every mini-to-max rocker that finds themselves thirsty in London does the fuller tour (found here: http://lifeinthebladelane.blogspot.com/2009/03/rock-pub-crawl.html) and adds any I’ve missed. After all, its the sheer volume and frequent practice that really counts, eh? ;-)

We’re a very discerning bunch. Mind you none of these bars are BAD by any means.
