The New Annotated Dracula

Monday, February 23rd, 2009 by Vincent

I’ve read Dracula a couple of times. It’s not the greatest novel ever written and it certainly drags on more than most books should, but as far as seminal horror novels go there exists none more important. So having just found out about The New Annotated Dracula, I’m pretty excited to see what it’s about.

The book is beautifully bound, full of illustrations, photographs, and explanations of key locations, and is also loaded with ruminations on Stoker’s inspirations, allegories, and personal relationships with those who inspired the characters and story. It’s written in the style I feel all annotated books should be: one column for the original text (The 1897 edition in this case), and one column of slightly smaller print for the annotations. Head over to the Barnes and Noble page to see photos; it will make an awesome gift to yourself in this dreadfully horrorless time of year.

Go Heath Ledger

Not sure if I agree that he was the best supporting actor this year, but a good gesture regardless. Great actor and great person. And his rendition of the Joker did kick ass.

Red Mist movie? I give you Red Mist metal

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 by Price

Fresh off of reading Vincent’s post, I came across the band Red Mist while purusing through the latest issue of Terrorizer last night in a tube station. Not half bad.

Reminds me of Chimaira, which is a good thing. Although dude up top with the fancy facial hair needs to rethink the concept.

Red Mist… this shit any good?

Ok, so on top of Let The Right One In, Grace (looks amazing), and a thousand other horror movies I missed last year or need to see soon, I definitely need to see Red Mist. It looks REALLY stupid, has an original plot, and stars the distractingly good looking older sister from The Uninvited.  I’m in!

Night of the Living Dead

Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Vincent

Man, I’m not sure the legality of what Hulu’s doing, or who’s responsible, or what I’m talking about, but the fact that the entire classic Night of the Living Dead can be watched online, in good quality, is just incredible.

Being Human, I drunkenly recall, is a good show

Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Price

So last night, I was doing what I do best, which was getting too drunk, making a mess trying to crack peanuts open, and flipping around the few channels I get free in London. One of these happened to be BBC3, and Being Human happened to be on. When Vincent originally wrote about this, I failed to put 2 and 2 together to realize I’d have a chance to watch it live.

As all of those BBC shows seem to run together, cut out of the same mold, it took me a bit to realize what I was watching. It became pretty clear when two people were essentially having a blood orgy in a bathroom. My interest was gotten.

The bit of the show I saw was very promising. As mentioned, the gore factor was a lot more intense than I would have imagined. Good strong language helped as well. I think this was the 2nd episode, so they were definitely in character introduction mode. I hope to rewatch the first 2 and get to see the 3rd on its normal debut time.

I’m hoping I have found a new show to follow now that Dexter is done for the year.

Heavy Metal Thunder: in which I talk about album art too

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 by Price

Not to totally rehash Vincent’s earlier post on album art, but I have to chime in myself.

Last weekend while stumbling drunk around the streets of London, I came across a store called Fopp (funny in and of itself), which is your run of the mill cd/dvd/book seller, except that the prices were actually good, and the selection was interesting.

I had heard of Heavy Metal Thunder a while back, but had completely forgotten about it. It was cheap, only 3 pounds, so I had to.

Keep your black shirts black

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 by Vincent

This is a great post on how to keep you keep your blackest-of-the-black t-shirts staying their darkest. It’s written to metal fans, but anyone who likes death/horror/blood/sacrifice/murder undoubtedly has at least 400 black t-shirts in their drawer, so it’s applicable to you as well. Here’s an excerpt:

3) NEVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER ON METAL SHIRTS. “Softener” on a metal shirt? Are you kidding? Does the Snuggle bear really look like he knows the difference between Iron Maiden and Iron Angel? Not only should true metalheads welcome and relish Unsoftness, but fabric softener works by expanding the fibers of the fabric, thereby subjecting your battle armor to undue wear and tear. There’s time for that later.

See? Useful and hilarious.
