Halloween (Un)Metal Part 2: Snowden

September 29th, 2008 by Vincent

Atlanta’s Snowden is awesome.  They also aren’t very popular, and that’s a god damned shame considering how many bands there are out there that have attempted to do what they do, failed to come close to achieving their level of atmospherics and dark hooks, and yet still receive more press. For god’s sake, there’s a girl in the band! That alone should move at least 50,000 units, but I guess it’s all about who you know. It reeks of voodoo.

Anyway, more after the jump.

Snowden achieve the seemingly unachievable- moody shoegazing music with upbeat basslines and dare I say …danceable rhythms? Ok, that’s a stretch. You can’t dance to it, but you can do more to it than just cry and stare at a picture of your ex.  It’s bleak and heavy, but it’s also upbeat and catchy. It’s the perfect mix of reverb and grinding bass.

Unlike most albums of the last 5 years, their debut Anti-Anti holds up 2 years after it was released. They didn’t fall into the trap of making an album completely of the time, and as a result it’s not as instantly dated as say, The Killers’ first album.

Anyway, if you see them coming around again (should be soon), put them on your calendar and you won’t regret it. Price and I caught them in Brooklyn and had an amazing time headbanging to music that can in no way be described as metal, and that’s a pretty metal experience.
