The Midnight Meat Train, or “Clive Barker Getting the Shaft”
September 18th, 2008 by PriceIf you want to see a sad yet genuine display of girly excitement and childish behavior, witness Vincent and I watching a horror movie trailer over and over again, discussing how “sick”, “brutal”, “ridiculous”, or “yay!” the movie looks.
For myself, there is an additional multiplier involved when said movie is a Clive Barker vehicle. Ever since I discovered Pinhead and the Hellraiser series, eyes-wide in my friend’s basement clutching a blanket and a 2-liter of Mountain Dew, I knew horror was for me. Fast forward to today, and I am super-stoked to see his latest offering, Midnight Meat Train.
Seriously, how awesome does this look?!
Anyways, as usual seeing this particular trailer got me excited. It had several things going for it, being a Clive Barker flick, having an eerie gritty and dirty feel to it, and also being based around the subway, as I have an affinity for (and dependence on) public transportation. The original story also appeared in the first volume of the Books of Blood, the first Clive Barker I ever read. The plot for the movie centers around a photographer trailing a serial killer who’s been doing his bidness on the subway.
Apparently the movie studio (Lionsgate) did not share the same excitement as originally thought. Most of you folks are probably well aware of the controversy surrounding the release (and then non-release) . There was a big stink between the Lionsgate chief and Barker, as more focus was put on classics like The Strangers and Midnight got ignored. Originally slated for a May release, the movie did not see the light of day until August.
Once released, Midnight got the royal treatment and was premiered in dollar theaters. You know, the ones you only went to in high school (when you were broke) or on a random Tuesday night in college (when you were broke). Not necessarily a destination, more of time-killer. It would be hard to get excited for a movie at the dollar cinema, unless you’re a bottle of Jagermeister deep.
I don’t know all the details as Lionsgate and I severed ties a LONG time ago, so I’ll let you read the links and dig as deep as you wish into the dirty details regarding the release. Regardless, it seems the movie is FINALLY getting some respect, and just in time for Halloween, Midnight Meat Train is getting a 2-night midnight (how fitting!) showing at the Landmark Sunshine Theater in NYC. If you’re in the area, get your ass over and support this film. Showing this Friday and Saturday, the 19th and the 20th.
Oh yeah, and Brooke Shields? Remember her? Probably not. She’s in this too. Craziness.
I can smell Halloween now …
